Abstract:The effects of nystatin on the brown planthopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens, were determined by using electrical penetration graph (EPG), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and microscopic examination. The BPHs were reared on the 0, 150, 300 or 600 U/mL concentrations of nystatin-treated rice plants, respectively. The results showed that the numbers of yeast-like symbiotes (YLS) in nystatin-treated 3rd instar BPH nymphs were lower than those of the control except the 150 U/mL treatment. The numbers of YLS in 5th instar BPH nymphs declined remarkably along with increasing nystatin concentration. But no significant difference was detected between 300 U/mL and 600 U/mL nystatin-treated populations. The frequency of N4-b (a parameter for determining the feeding behavior of BPH) was significantly higher in control population than that in all nystatin treated populations. However, no significant difference was detected among all nystatin treated concentrations. The nystatin had no effect on the feeding time of BPH, but it had a significant impact on the content of essential amino acids. The contents of all essential amino acids of BPH in 600 U/mL nystatin treatment were significant lower than those of BPH in other treatments; the contents of most essential amino acids of BPH in 300 U/mL nystatin treatment and the contents of all essential amino acids of BPH in 150 U/mL nystatin treatment were also significantly lower than those of BPH in the control treatment. In conclusion, nystatin could significantly reduce the number of YLS and the content of essential amino acids in BPH, but no remarkable effects on feeding behavior. |
