Abstract:To clarify the changes of body temperature and respiration rate of the oriental armyworm, Mythimna separata (Walker), during flight, the body temperature and respiration rate were studied by using the semiconductor thermometer and the automatic CO2 recording equipment-infrared gas analyzer when moths were tethered to fly at 25℃ and 19℃. The results showed that the body temperatures of adults increased significantly during flight at 25℃ and 19℃, and then decreased gradually to be stable. The highest body temperatures of female and male moths were 29.78℃ and 30.71℃ at 20 min after flying at 25℃. The highest body temperatures of female and male moths were 22.90℃ and 22.72℃ at 15 min after flying at 19℃. The respiration rate of female moths increased significantly during the first 15 min and then decreased gradually to be stable, and the highest respiration rate could reach 149.98×10-6/min and 106.12×10-6/min at 25℃ and 19℃. The relationship between the changes of respiration rate and body temperature of the moth during flight was positively correlated. The results indicated that body temperature and respiration rate of M. separata significantly increased during flight so as to meet the physiological requirements.
