Abstract:In order to clarify the effect of CO2-enriched atmosphere exposure on the consumption of energy sources in drugstore beetle Stegobium paniceum, the content of polysaccharides, soluble protein and lipid in S. paniceum were determined, after they were exposed to different CO2-enriched atmospheres (10%, 30%, 50%, 70% and 90%) for 2, 4, 6, and 8 h. Their utilization rates were also calculated to explore the response of insects to CO2 exposure from physiological and biochemical levels. The results showed that the contents of polysaccharides, soluble protein and lipid decreased, but their utilization rates increased, with increasing CO2 concentration under the same exposure time or with the extension of exposure time under the same CO2 concentration, compared to the controls. The highest content and lowest utilization rate of energy source were in the treatment of 2 h exposure under 10% CO2, and the content of polysaccharides, soluble protein and lipid were 13.94, 162.87 and 35.14 μg/insect, with their utilization rates of 4.85%, 2.04% and 11.02%, respectively; the lowest content and highest utilization rate of energy source were in the treatment of 8 h exposure under 90% CO2, with the contents of 11.02, 145.69, 19.08 μg/insect and utilization rates of 24.80%, 12.37% and 51.68%, respectively. In addition, there was significant difference in the utilization rates of the three kinds of energy sources, and the order was lipid > polysaccharides > soluble protein under all the CO2 exposure treatments. Therefore, the CO2 concentration and exposure time were important factors causing energy sources consumption of S. paniceum, and the significantly different utilization rates of different energy sources in insects under different CO2 exposure treatments probably had some associations with their resistance development to CO2. |
