Abstract:In order to reveal the phototaxis mechanism and visual physiological mechanisms of pepper buprestid beetle Agrilus zanthoxylumi, a light behavior-based approach was used to assess the effects of various factors on phototactic behavior, including light source, light intensity, insect density, and starvation treatment. The external morphological structure of compound eyes for A. zanthoxylumi adults was observed by scanning electron microscope, and external morphological parameters were measured. The results indicated that within the wavelength range of 395 to 630 nm, the light source significantly influenced the phototactic responses of both male and female adults of A. zanthoxylumi (with a female-tomale ratio of 1 ∶1). Notably, the phototactic response rate to red light peaked at 79.47%. Female adults demonstrated the highest sensitivity to red light, whereas male adults were most responsive to green light. With the exception of the yellow light, the phototactic response rate decreased as light intensity increased following stimulation by blue, green, orange, and red lights. After starvation treatment, the phototactic response rates of A. zanthoxylumi to green, yellow, orange, and red lights were significantly lower than those in the control group. Under green and red light stimulation, increased insect density correlated positively with higher phototactic response rates in adult A. zanthoxylumi. Conversely, for blue, yellow, orange, and ultraviolet lights, the phototactic response rate first increased and then decreased with rising insect density. The compound eyes of A. zanthoxylumi adults were kidney-shaped, with no discernible differences in external appearance between males and females. The surfaces of the ommatidia were smooth and relatively flat, with no sensilla observed at the edges. The central ommatidia were characterized as equilateral hexagons, while the marginal ommatidia exhibited irregular shapes. The number of ommatidia in females (2 013.00) was significantly higher than in males (1 973.00). These findings demonstrate that the phototaxis of A. zanthoxylumi is influenced by wavelength, light intensity, gender, starvation and population density. Moreover, the sensitive wavelengths differ between female and male adults, with females exhibiting stronger visual resolution in their compound eyes compared to males.
